Electrical Protection

Electrical Engineering Courses

Course Overview

Protection systems are the silent guardians of every electrical network — until a mal-set relay turns a minor fault into a blackout or a fatality. This five-day course builds real competence in power system protection: fault analysis, protection philosophy, the main relay types and their settings, coordination and grading, and testing practice. It suits both engineers consolidating theory and technicians moving up to settings and commissioning work.

What You Will Achieve

  • Calculate fault currents and understand what protection must detect
  • Explain protection philosophy: sensitivity, selectivity, speed, security
  • Apply overcurrent, differential and distance protection appropriately
  • Grade and coordinate protection so the right device trips first
  • Test and commission relays with proper documentation

Who Should Attend

Electrical engineers, protection technicians, substation staff and maintenance professionals in utilities, mines and heavy industry.

Course Outline

  1. 01Power system faults: types, causes and calculation
  2. 02Instrument transformers: CTs, VTs and their errors
  3. 03Protection philosophy and the protection scheme
  4. 04Overcurrent and earth-fault protection and settings
  5. 05Differential protection: transformers, busbars, feeders
  6. 06Distance protection for transmission lines
  7. 07Grading and coordination studies in practice
  8. 08Relay testing, commissioning and maintenance

Arc Flash Hazard Analysis

Done well, Arc Flash Hazard Analysis protects margins, reputations and careers; done badly, it quietly costs all three. Delegates spend the 5 days working real examples end to end, with the facilitator turning each exercise into transferable technique. Certificates are awarded on completion, but the real takeaway is a set of skills delegates have already practised.
